France and Spain, the two pre-tournament favourites, meet in the World Cup semifinal at Dallas Stadium on Tuesday, July 14, with kickoff at 12:30 AM IST on Wednesday. Both sides are unbeaten through six matches. France have won all six in normal time, scoring freely against Senegal, Iraq, Norway, Sweden, Paraguay and Morocco.
Spain have had to work harder for several victories, winning four matches by a single goal, but have conceded the fewest goals at the World Cup. The sides last met in the Euro 2024 semifinal, which Spain won 2-1 on their way to the title. Tuesday’s rematch will decide who advances to the final in pursuit of Spain’s second World Cup and France’s third.
Here are five key individual battles to watch:
Kylian Mbappe vs Pau Cubarsi
Mbappe has eight goals in this tournament and 20 in as many World Cup appearances, one behind Lionel Messi’s record of 21. He will come up against his El Clásico opponent, 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi, who has played every minute of Spain’s campaign and boasts a passing accuracy above 96 percent, the best among outfield players at the tournament.
He contained Cristiano Ronaldo in the Round of 16 and, alongside Aymeric Laporte, has been central to Spain’s run of five clean sheets. Limiting Mbappe’s runs in behind will be his toughest assignment yet.
Lamine Yamal vs Lucas Digne
Yamal has one goal and no assists in six games, a quieter return than his Euro 2024 campaign of one goal and four assists. France has recalled the experienced Lucas Digne ahead of Theo Hernandez for his defensive reliability and crossing ability, but social media is rife with videos of Digne shutting off against Bournemouth’s Ryan in the Premier League, and Yamal would love it.
Digne has started the last three matches, including a seven-clearance display against Sweden, and brings the experience of 56 caps and two World Cups. Spain will look to get Yamal into dangerous areas early, while Digne’s positioning will be crucial in preventing him from cutting inside onto his stronger left foot.
Rodri vs Ousmane Dembele
Spain captain and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner Rodri has completed 80 line-breaking passes at this World Cup, the most by a Spain player since 2010. He also completed 98 of 104 passes in the quarterfinal against Belgium while controlling the tempo from deep.
Opposite him is reigning Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, who has five goals, including a first-half hat-trick against Norway. Rodri’s ability to restrict the supply to Dembele, particularly when he drifts central, could prove decisive.
Michael Olise vs Marc Cucurella
Olise leads the tournament with six assists in his first World Cup, equalling the long-standing single-edition mark associated with Pele’s 1970 campaign. His deliveries and through-balls have been a constant threat, including two assists against Sweden.
Spain’s Marc Cucurella has also contributed creatively, registering two assists against Austria before setting up Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner in the Euro 2024 final. His balance between attacking support and defensive discipline will be tested by Olise’s pace on the counter.
Fabian Ruiz vs Adrien Rabiot
Fabian Ruiz was preferred to Pedri in the quarterfinal and justified the decision by opening the scoring against Belgium, earning a 7.0 rating.
Rabiot has started every match alongside Manu Kone in France’s midfield, with his display against Morocco highlighting his physicality and ability to arrive late in the box. Their duel for midfield control and progression is likely to influence which side’s attackers receive the better opportunities.
