Pune: Online fraudsters cheated an elderly (79) resident of Hadapsar, of Rs 6 lakhs by posing as his relatives stuck in a foreign country. The cheating took place between Jan 2024 and April this year, the Hadapsar police said.According to the police, the suspects messaged the complainant, a retired central government officer, saying that they are based in a foreign country and wanted to obtain visa for India. “They claimed that they weren’t able to make the payment to secure their visas and requested him to transfer money to the agent, who was processing it. They promised to transfer the money to the complainant’s account”, police said.The complainant went on transferring money for visas and other tax expenses to the bank accounts shared by the fraudsters. Upon constantly being asked for more money, the complainant realised he was being duped.
