The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday issued an advisory to all Indian nationals to avoid any offers to join the Russian Army amid the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, warning that the path is “fraught with danger”.

In a statement, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed recent reports of Indians being recruited into the Russian military and issued a strong advisory, stating: “The government has on several occasions over the past one year underlined the risks and dangers inherent in this course of action and cautioned Indian citizens accordingly.”

According to reports, at least 15 Indian nationals are caught in the battlefield in Ukraine, where they are being forced to serve on the Russian side.

The MEA said it has raised the issue firmly with the Russian Ambassador in New Delhi, and that the Indian Embassy in Moscow is actively engaging with Russian authorities for the early release and return of all Indian nationals currently associated with the Russian Army.

“We are also in touch with the families of the affected Indian citizens,” Jaiswal added.

MEA has also reiterated India’s consistent position regarding the recruitment of Indian nationals into the Russian Army.
