LeBron James is officially on the open market, and the list of teams chasing him keeps growing. James informed the Los Angeles Lakers this week that he will not return for the 2026-27 season, ending an eight-year run in Los Angeles that included a championship, and Rich Paul has since heard from close to half the league about his client's next home. The Warriors, Cavaliers and Heat emerged as early frontrunners, but Minnesota, Denver and now Philadelphia have all registered interest, according to multiple reports. James, who will turn 42 in December, is prioritizing title contention and personal happiness over maximum salary, sources say, which has kept his market wide open even as he enters unprecedented territory as a 24th-year player.

Lakers governor Jeanie Buss confirmed the split in a statement Tuesday, thanking James for his eight seasons with the franchise.

James, for his part, posted on social media that it was "truly a honor to wear" the purple and gold, adding, "Hope I made a few proud during my stint."

James has instructed Paul to talk to every interested team and report back with his options before making a final call, according to a source familiar with his thinking. He has not decided whether next season will be his last, but he wants to keep playing "meaningful, competitive basketball."

The Lakers, meanwhile, are left with roughly $52 million in cap space and needs at wing and center after James' departure.

Golden State Warriors

The Warriors have been the team most aggressively tied to James, and they have shaped their entire offseason around clearing a path to sign him. Golden State re-signed guard De'Anthony Melton to a two-year, $11 million deal this week, but the move does not affect the team's pursuit of James. The Warriors specifically used the bi-annual exception on Melton so they could preserve their mid-level exception for a potential James contract, sources told ESPN.

Golden State also explored a trade for Washington Wizards forward Anthony Davis, hoping to reunite him with James after the pair won a championship together with the Lakers in 2020. That plan has stalled. The Wizards have made clear they are not entertaining offers for Davis, who they view as a cornerstone alongside Trae Young and No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa. Warriors decision-makers have reportedly told James they want a commitment from him before pursuing any Davis trade, meaning the Curry-James-Davis reunion many fans hoped for may not materialize even if James picks the Bay Area.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland remains one of the three teams most frequently mentioned alongside Golden State and Miami since James became available. The Cavaliers represent one of two franchises James won a championship with, and their front office has stayed in the mix as free agency talks continue.

Miami Heat

The Heat, James' other former team, are also considered a frontrunner. Miami has been working largely with veteran minimum contracts this offseason to preserve flexibility, leaving roughly $11 million available if they land James, while also addressing other roster needs around new addition Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Minnesota Timberwolves

Minnesota has reached out and expressed real interest in adding James, according to multiple reports, joining the growing list of teams hoping to convince him that a smaller market can still offer a genuine title path.

Denver Nuggets

The Nuggets have also conveyed interest in signing James, and the fit intrigues plenty of NBA observers. Denver already has a three-time MVP in Nikola Jokic and an All-Star running mate in Jamal Murray, and James could slot in as a third scoring option and secondary playmaker, a role he handled well in his final season with the Lakers.

Denver is also working with a tight budget, and reports suggest James could be willing to sign for close to the veteran minimum in the right situation, which would make the fit financially realistic for a team trying to re-sign its own free agents without ballooning into the luxury tax.

Philadelphia 76ers

The 76ers are the newest team in the mix, according to The Athletic's Tony Jones, who reported that Philadelphia has expressed interest in acquiring James.

The timing is notable. The report landed hours after the 76ers agreed to trade Paul George and multiple draft picks to the Boston Celtics in exchange for Jaylen Brown, a deal that instantly raised Philadelphia's ceiling.

Adding James to a core of Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe would give the 76ers one of the deepest rosters in the East, particularly with James and Embiid having played together on the 2024 Team USA Olympic squad. Philadelphia has limited cap flexibility, sitting about $9.6 million below its first-apron hard cap, but James has signaled he is more interested in a contender than a max contract.James' camp has not tipped its hand on which pitch resonates most. With teams from both coasts and the Mountain West now involved, the decision figures to shape the balance of power in both conferences well before opening night.
