French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska loses in Wimbledons first round to Mananchaya Sawangkaew after injuring her ankle while failing to convert a match point

French Open finalist Maja Chwalinska suffered a shock first-round exit at Wimbledon, losing to Thailand’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew on Monday after picking up an injury at a crucial stage of the match.

Just weeks after her fairytale run as a qualifier at Roland Garros, Chwalinska failed to replicate her clay-court form on the grass at the All England Club.

The Polish 20th seed, who was beaten by Mirra Andreeva in the French Open final, started strongly and took the first set against Sawangkaew. However, she lost momentum in the next two sets as the world number 164 staged a comeback to secure a memorable 2-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.

Chwalinska later revealed that the turning point came when she injured her ankle while attempting to convert a match point in the second set.

“I fell, and I felt my ankle. I wanted to continue, but it definitely didn’t help me later on," Chwalinska said.

“It’s Wimbledon. I don’t want to retire at Wimbledon. I got cramps everywhere. I don’t take a huge risk on my health; it’s gonna be okay.

“But, yeah, I think I would have many regrets if I would retire, so I just wanted to continue."
