FRI team detected a mild mealybug infestation on parts of the tree
Gaya: A team from the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, on Thursday carried out an eco-friendly pest management exercise to protect the sacred Bodhi tree from a possible mealybug infestation.During a routine inspection, FRI scientists Shailesh Pandey and Santan Barthawal detected a mild mealybug infestation on parts of the tree. The infestation had led to yellowing of some leaves, they said.To prevent the spread of the pests, an eco-friendly spray was applied to the affected areas. As a precautionary measure, a neighbouring peepal tree was also treated to minimise the risk of infestation.Based on their assessment, the scientists recommended the use of eco-friendly pesticides to contain the infection, which tends to spread during the monsoon season.Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) member secretary Mahashweta Maharathi said the treatment was undertaken as a preventive measure ahead of the peak monsoon period, when humid conditions favour the growth and spread of mealybugs.“The initiative aims to ensure the continued health, vitality and long-term conservation of the sacred Bodhi tree and the adjoining peepal tree,” she said.
