A horrific double murder sent shockwaves through Bengaluru’s Vignana Nagar locality on Wednesday morning after a 33-year-old software engineer allegedly stabbed his elderly parents to death following a domestic dispute. The incident occurred around 7.30 am at Villa No. 112 in the Adarsh Vista Apartment complex within the HAL police station limits. The victims have been identified as 60-year-old Naveen Chandra Bhatt, a retired Indian Navy captain, and his 55-year-old wife, Dr Shyamala Bhatt, a practising dentist.
According to police reports, the suspect, Rohan Chandra Bhatt, who works as an independent software engineer, engaged in a heated physical altercation with his parents over personal family matters. During the confrontation, Rohan allegedly attacked both his father and mother with a knife, inflicting fatal injuries. In a desperate attempt to save them, they were rushed to Manipal Hospital; however, the medical staff declared both of them deceased by 8.15 am due to the severity of the wounds.
The HAL police have officially registered a murder case following a formal complaint lodged by Dr Madhavi Nair, a neighbour and physician at Manipal Hospital. Investigating officers quickly apprehended Rohan Chandra Bhatt at the scene, and he will be produced before a court.
While the initial motive is cited as a domestic row, authorities stated that the exact trigger for such extreme violence remains under investigation.
In an official statement regarding the progress of the case, the police confirmed the arrest and the status of the investigation. “We have arrested the accused, Rohan Chandra Bhatt, for the murder of his parents, and he will be produced before the honourable court. The exact reason for the murder is yet to be ascertained. Currently, the bodies of the deceased have been kept in the mortuary at Bowring Hospital. The daughter of the deceased has departed from the USA, and the post-mortem will be conducted after her arrival," said DCP of Whitefield Division Saidulu Adavath.
The neighbours are in shock even as the police continue to piece together the events leading up to this grim act. The arrival of the victims’ daughter is expected within the next 24 hours to claim the remains and assist with the final rites.
