After more than a decade and a half in exile, Tarique Rahman has re-emerged as the central figure in Bangladesh politics, leading the BNP back to power.

With the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) securing a victory in country's general election, party's chairman Tarique Rahman, is set to become Bangladesh's next prime minister.

Son of former president Ziaur Rahman and ex-prime minister Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman leads the BNP back to power after nearly two decades.

His father and former president, Ziaur Rahman, was assassinated in 1981; meanwhile, his mother, Khaleda Zia, served as the prime minister for several terms.

Living in London since 2008, Tarique Rahman continued to guide BNP from abroad before court rulings after Hasina’s fall cleared the path for his political return.

After over 17 years abroad, Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh and assumed full leadership of the BNP ahead of the elections.

Active in politics since the 1990s, Tarique Rahman rose within the BNP and later became its acting chairman, though his career has been marked by controversy.

Positioning himself as a reformist, Tarique Rahman has promised anti-corruption governance, stronger institutions and economic revival.

Bangladesh’s first election after the 2024 upheaval unfolded without the country’s two dominant leaders directly in the contest.

After a turbulent transition, Bangladesh faces economic and political challenges as Tarique Rahman takes on a high-stakes mandate to stabilise the country.
