From ice treats to cool showers: Pune Zoo rolls out smart summer care

The mercury is rising, but 380 inhabitants of The Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park (Katraj Zoo) are all geared up to beat the heat in style. Implementing a comprehensive summer care strategy, zoo authorities are ensuring that the animals remain calm, cool, and comfortable in the scorching summer.

There’s hydrotherapy for elephants, who enjoy cold-water baths twice daily, while sambar deer and tigers can cool off in the water ponds.

There’s something for the visitors too! Additional drinking water stations, shaded resting sheds, and mistcooled walkways are the exciting new additions.

High-pressure mist foggers, air coolers, and sprinklers across enclosures for tigers, lions have been installed. Sloth bears and monkeys are given special “ice cakes” made of frozen fruit and honey.
