Landry Shamet is used to taking shots on the basketball court.

But this weekend, the New York Knicks guard was busy taking a different kind os shot: from behind the action at the U.S. Open finals as part of the tournament’s photography team.

The 27-year-old NBA player, who joined the league in 2018, worked an unpaid role with the U.S. Tennis Association at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Armed with his own camera equipment, Shamet was in the photo pit snapping images of both the women’s and men’s finals, including Carlos Alcaraz’s victory over Jannik Sinner.

“This all started as a hobby about four years ago," Shamet explained. “And somehow I’m here at the U.S. Open."

From Hobby to Passion

Initially, Shamet took casual photos with his phone. A friend encouraged him to invest in a proper camera, something he resisted at first.

“My friend was like, ‘You should get a camera,’" Shamet recalled. “I’m like, ‘I’m not going to use a camera. Who has cameras anymore? You just use your phone.’"

But once he bought one, he began bringing it on NBA road trips and using it around the streets at home. Over time, his curiosity evolved into skill, and like other athletes-turned-photographers, he started getting access to shoot professional sports events.

Earning Respect Behind the Lens

This was Shamet’s second stint with the USTA. In 2024, he covered the early rounds of the Open, but his strong performance earned him a spot on finals weekend this year.

His 6-foot-4 frame even gave him a unique edge—allowing him to shoot trophy presentations, such as Aryna Sabalenka’s, from angles others couldn’t reach.

Balancing Basketball and Beyond

Fresh off playing on the first Knicks team to reach the Eastern Conference Finals since 2000, Shamet has been recognized more often by fans while walking the grounds in Flushing Meadows.

He remains hopeful for a return to the Knicks next season, but regardless of where his basketball journey leads, photography is now firmly part of his identity.
