Education Budget 2026: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has announced the 2026 Union Budget which included several major and far-reaching decisions to promote jobs in both the public and private sectors. It also included establishment of three new AIIMS as well as girls’ hostel in every district. Check out the key announcements below:
- Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the 2026 General Budget that with the help of IIMs, 10,000 tourist guides will be trained for 20,000 iconic sites across the country. These guides will receive specialised training and upskilling through short-term courses offered in a hybrid mode at IIMs.
- The National Council for Hotel Management will be upgraded to the National Institute of Hospitality. This institute will train youth according to industry standards.
- The Finance Minister also revealed plans to build five university townships near industrial and logistics corridors. The central government will support states in this effort, which will include multiple colleges, universities, research institutes, skill centres, and residential complexes.
- A girls’ hostel will be opened in every district.
- To strengthen Ayurveda, three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda will be established, promoting research, training, and treatment in traditional medicine. AYUSH pharmacies will be upgraded to improve the quality and availability of medicines. New veterinary and para-veterinary colleges will be set up to increase the number of veterinary professionals to 20,000, with financial assistance from the government.
- The Finance Minister announced the establishment of Content Creator Labs in 15,000 secondary schools and 500 colleges to boost the animation, visual effects, gaming, and comics (AVGC) sector. These labs, supported by the Indian Institute of Creative Technologies in Mumbai, aim to rapidly grow India’s AVGC sector, provide creative skills to youth, and strengthen India’s global standing.
- To make India a global biopharmaceutical manufacturing hub, three new National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research will be established, and seven existing institutions will be upgraded.
- Corporate Mitras will be created with the help of CA, CS, and CMA institutions like ICAI, ICSI, and ICMAI to develop short-term modules and practical tools.
- For young entrepreneurs, the Finance Minister announced an SME Development Fund of Rs 10,000 crore.
- The Finance Minister also allocated Rs 10,000 crore over five years to the biopharma sector, aiming to make medicines for serious diseases more affordable and to position the country as a biopharma hub.
- The government has proposed the creation of an Education to Employment and Enterprise Standing Committee, which will be the driving force behind a developed India. This committee will identify and improve factors that drive employment and exports. The government will also discuss the impact of AI on employment and essential skills.
