A new chapter in world sport is set to be written as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi prepares to debut for India. The Men in Blue kick off their Ireland tour in Belfast on Friday, with all eyes firmly on the teenage batting prodigy stepping onto the international stage.

Yet, Sooryavanshi is not the first to shine so early. Excelling at such a young age in an elite team sport remains a rarity. Over the years, a select few teenagers have burst onto the scene and gone on to become legends of their respective games.

Pelé starred for Brazil at just 17, leading them to the 1958 World Cup title. He still holds multiple records from that tournament, including being the youngest scorer and the youngest player to win a World Cup.

Lamine Yamal lit up the 2024 European Championship for Spain at the age of 16. He became the youngest player and goalscorer in EURO history, underlining his rapid rise on the international stage.

Nadia Comăneci made Olympic history at 14 with the first perfect 10 in gymnastics at Montreal 1976. She went on to win five Olympic gold medals in her career, becoming one of the sport’s most iconic figures.

Marjorie Gestring became an Olympic gold medalist in diving at just 13. She remains one of the youngest Olympic champions ever, highlighting how rare such early success is at that level.

Jennifer Capriati turned professional at 13 and won Olympic singles gold at 16. She also became the youngest player to reach a Grand Slam semifinal and break into the world’s top 10 rankings.

Martina Hingis claimed a Grand Slam singles title at the age of 16. She later became the youngest world No. 1 and won five Grand Slam singles titles in her career.

Monica Seles also won a Grand Slam singles title at just 16. She captured eight major titles as a teenager, dominating women’s tennis in the early 1990s.
