A teen girl stepped into the Bengali entertainment industry in 2010 and quickly became a household name in West Bengal. Almost 16 years later, that girl — Saayoni Ghosh — is turning heads again, this time with her captivating speeches, which include chanting the Hanuman Chalisa to invoking other Hindu and Muslim prayers and Sikh hymns.

Ghosh may be a first-time MP, but the crowds she is pulling at rallies and roadshows of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) are comparable to stalwarts like Mamata Banerjee and Suvendu Adhikari. Her speeches have become a talking point on social media amid the hyper-polarised 2026 West Bengal election.

The TMC’s star campaigner is pushing a message of unity even as the BJP accuses Mamata Banerjee of appeasing Muslims and being “anti-Hindu".

Who Is Saayoni Ghosh?

Born in Kolkata in 1993, Ghosh completed her schooling in the city before moving into the film industry. She made her acting debut with Ichhe Dana and went on to deliver notable performances in films like Kanamachi, Rajkahini, Aparajito, and Byomkesh O Chiriyakhana.

Ghosh joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 2021 ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. Known for her strong oratory skills and energetic campaigning, she made an immediate impression. Despite losing her debut election from Asansol to BJP’s Agnimitra Paul, Mamata Banerjee continued to back her and later appointed her chief of the West Bengal Trinamool Youth Congress.

The turning point in her political career came in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when she secured a landslide victory from Jadavpur, winning by a margin of over two lakh votes.

She has since emerged as one of the more vocal opposition MPs in Parliament, often directly targeting the BJP-led government in her speeches.

The Lok Sabha MP is also said to be part of the inner circle of Abhishek Banerjee, the nephew of Mamata Banerjee and widely seen as the party’s second-in-command.

Saayoni Ghosh’s Controversies

Ghosh has also faced scrutiny. She was questioned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with the West Bengal primary school recruitment case.

Earlier, in 2015, she courted controversy after posting a contentious image on X during Mahashivratri. She later claimed that her account had been hacked.
