The trade deal between India and the United States on Monday, which included a reduction in reciprocal tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent, sparked reactions from leaders across the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump held a phone call on Monday during which they agreed to the deal. President Trump wrote on Truth Social that the US had pulled down its reciprocal tariffs on India to 18 per cent.

The phone talks took place on the same day that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar travelled to Washington DC.

Soon after the announcement, PM Modi affirmed the development on X.

“Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement," he wrote.

BJP leaders hail the deal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah called it a big day for India–US relations.

“A big day for India-US relations as the trade deal has been locked with a significantly reduced tariff of 18%, paving the way for stronger trade ties and mutual growth. I congratulate PM @narendramodi and President @realDonaldTrump for this historic deal," Shah wrote on X.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin described the decision as “highly commendable". He said the deepening ties between the two countries would have a “very positive and far-reaching impact" and would give momentum to the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India campaigns.

Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw called the deal a “win-win", saying citizens and industries of both countries would benefit greatly.

Actor and Himachal Pradesh MP Kangana Ranaut said India was strengthening its economic footprint under PM Modi’s leadership.

“Welcome the announcements on bilateral trade following the conversation between PM @narendramodi and President @realDonaldTrump. This will create more jobs, spur growth and promote innovation in both economies. It will strengthen ‘Make in India’ endeavors and encourage trusted technology ties. The opportunities in our economic engagement are truly vast and we are confident of realizing them. A robust economic relationship is the strongest foundation for our strategic partnership," reads his post on X.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal termed the agreement a landmark deal that would unlock opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers. He said it would help India access technology from the US and described it as a historic turning point in India-US relations.

“This unlocks the power of two large democracies working together for the shared prosperity of their people. Both India and US are natural allies and our partnership will co-create technologies, co-develop solutions, and work together for peace, growth, and a brighter future for India and US. This agreement unlocks unprecedented opportunities for farmers, MSMEs, entrepreneurs, and skilled workers to Make in India for the world, Design in India for the world, and Innovate in India for the world. It will help India get technology from the US. It is not just a trade deal – it is a historic turning point that will reshape India-U.S. relations and accelerate our journey towards Viksit Bharat 2047," reads his post on X.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the deal would help Indian products reach wider global markets and create new possibilities for young entrepreneurs, farmers, and MSMEs.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the agreement would open new opportunities for youth, farmers, and MSMEs and strengthen collaboration between the two countries.

BJP IT Cell Head Amit Malviya said the agreement would boost Make in India, drive innovation, investment, job creation, and deepen India-US economic ties.
