Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli came off the bench in the second half of Brazil’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 match against Japan in Houston on Monday (June 29) and scored the winning goal for the five-time champions in the fifth minute of stoppage time (90+5′). The strike not only helped Brazil secure a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in their first knockout match of this year’s FIFA World Cup, but also earned Martinelli a place in the record books.

Martinelli’s goal in the 90+5th minute is the latest winning goal scored in normal time in the knockout stages of FIFA World Cup history.

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimarães provided the assist for Martinelli’s winner after Casemiro had equalised with a header in the 56th minute. Japan had taken a shock lead in the 29th minute before the veteran midfielder restored parity for Brazil.

Casemiro’s goal also saw him enter the record books.

The defensive midfielder, who is set to join Inter Miami, became the second-oldest player to score a goal for Brazil in a FIFA World Cup match.
