A gang of four persons from Andhra Pradesh were arrested by Arani Town police on Saturday for stealing 15 kgs of silver and gold ornaments at the two-storey jewellery showroom in the town last week.
Police said that the arrested persons were identified as K. Prabhu (26), B. Saravanan (35), V. Dinesh (38) and S. Chiranjeevi (32). Except Chiranjeevi, who hails from Tiruttani town, other three persons were residents in Chittoor (A.P).
Initial inquiry revealed that the gang members learnt about huge investments made by S. Perumal (38), a DMK functionary and owner of the jewellery showroom in Arani town, in Chittoor and Tirupati areas. They visited the showroom a few times and noticed a large collection of silver and gold jewellery. They also identified gaps in the existing security arrangements including absence of security guards in the showroom.
Police said it was on July 26 when staff of the showroom noticed broken lockers and display panels in the outlet. Stolen jewellery has been estimated around 15 kg of silver and gold ornaments.
Following an inspection by Tiruvannamalai SP M. Sudhakar, special teams were formed to nab the suspects. After analysing over 100 CCTV footage on the routes, police identified the suspects. They tracked them through mobile phone usage and local police.
Police said the gang was rounded up in Chittoor by a special team. Police recovered around four kg of silver jewellery from them. They were lodged at Central Prison in Vellore.
