GCC officials transferred to smaller local bodies

Chennai: The Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWS) department has promoted and posted 18 senior Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials as assistant commissioners in smaller urban local bodies across the state.

They have been transferred as far as Nagercoil, Erode, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Madurai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Salem, Tiruppur, Hosur, Vellore, Tambaram, Avadi and Kancheepuram.The transfers are part of a large-scale rejig in the MAWS department after the TVK govt took over. Officials said it will strengthen administration in fast-growing corporations functioning with vacant senior posts, enabling quicker decision-making and better delivery of civic services.“Out of 24 transfers, we filled six vacancies in the city and promoted the rest of the officials. We have posted them in smaller corporations to fill vacancies there,” said a senior official.Most of these officials have decades of experience in revenue, civil and planning subjects, making coordination and quality checks efficient. “The smaller local bodies also get national and international funded schemes. They need better supervision besides the corporation commissioner and the district collector. In-house officials from GCC are experienced, and their contacts back here with the directorate of MAWS will also help in quicker decision-making,” another official said.
