Chennai: The Chennai Higher Secondary School at Gopalapuram has come under police scanner after a teacher sent a Class VI student out of the classroom over menstruation on Friday. The issue came to light after the girl’s parents filed a complaint with the Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police station. Station officers confirmed that a CSR has been given for the complaint and that Inspector Boopathy Raj led an inquiry with the teachers on Saturday noon. Further action would be taken depending on the school head’s response. The school head, parent, and teaching staff were unavailable for comments.Joint commissioner (education) K Karpagam did not respond to multiple calls made by TOI.
GCC commissioner G S Sameeran told TOI that he has asked for a detailed report on the situation, following which the course of action would be decided. “I will get the report in 1-2 days. After hearing both sides, we will decide on the action,” he added. An education officer involved in the inquiry said the girl had moved out of the classroom by herself and waited near a flight of stairs, which was ‘misconstrued’ as being forced out of the classroom. “The teacher had merely asked the girl to sit at the back bench, which she declined. While the teacher had stepped out to inform her parents, the girl sat on the stairs. The parents who had arrived at the school were infuriated upon seeing this,” the official said, and a report would be submitted to the JC soon.
