Ahmedabad: Following the representation by the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SGCCI), the Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has announced a new tariff order for Dakshin Gujarat Vij Company Limited (DGVCL) for the year 2026-27.
The SGCCI leadership had actively participated in the tariff determination process and made detailed representations in the interest of industries and electricity consumers. Responding appropriately to this representation, the GERC has taken industry-oriented and practical decisions on various issues, as a result of which the industries of South Gujarat will get significant relief.
Accepting the representation made by the SGCCI, GERC has included important suggestions. These decisions will provide relief to the electricity consumers and help industries increase efficiency.
Main decisions and their benefits
1. Increase in TOU discount period: The time-of-use (TOU) discount period has been increased by 2 hours. The discount, which was earlier available from 11:00 to 3:00 pm, will now be available from 11:00 to 5:00 pm. The discount of Rs. 0.60 per unit is likely to benefit industries in South Gujarat by approximately Rs. 128 crore per year. This decision will improve load management and reduce the power cost of industries.
2. Prepaid smart meter condition removed: In view of the submission of the Chamber, the condition of having a prepaid smart meter to avail TOU discount has been removed. Now all eligible customers with smart meters will be able to avail this benefit, due to which the implementation will be easier and more widespread benefits will be available.
3. No increase in base tariff: The Commission has not increased the base tariff rates for all categories of consumers. This decision to keep the electricity rates stable will prove to be very beneficial for industries.
SGCCI president Nikhil Madrasi said, ‘These decisions will make energy-based industries more competitive and will accelerate the development of industries by reducing production costs. The Chamber expresses its gratitude to GERC for resolving the issues of the industries in a wise and practical manner. Along with this, the Chamber expresses its commitment to protect the interests of industries by actively representing them in policy matters affecting trade and industry in the future as well.”
