Germany have set the ball rolling at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a dominant show as they made light work of debutant Curacao – the smallest country to evet appear at the tournament – in a Group E clash held in Houston on Sunday. Kai Havertz scored a brace while Nico Schlotterbeck, Jamal Musiala, Nathaniel Brown and Deniz Undav added a goal each as the four-time world champions stormed to a 7-1 win.

The scoreline meant Germany are now the first team this century to score at seven or more goals in a FIFA world cup match three times. Germany have earlier thrashed Saudi Arabia 8-0 at the 2002 FIFA World Cup before humbling Brazil, the most successful team in the competition’s history with five titles, 7-1 in 2014.
