Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has called for the withdrawal of all US troops from the country amid tensions between the Trump administration and Washington’s NATO allies.
Tino Chrupalla, the party’s co-leader, told a meeting that it was time to remove allied troops and nuclear weapons from Germany in order to pursue an “independent" foreign policy, reported The Telegraph UK. “Let’s start implementing this with the withdrawal of US troops from Germany," he was quoted as saying.
Germany currently houses nearly 40,000 American troops, along with over a dozen major US military installations. Chrupalla’s remarks came after reports surfaced that US President Donald Trump was reportedly considering pulling US troops from Germany.
Chrupalla has previously claimed that NATO serves US interests too much. He also stressed on Saturday that Germany should not be drawn into foreign wars, praising Spain for refusing to allow the US from using its bases to attack Iran.
Germany’s Ramstein Air Base is being used by US forces as a hub to coordinate drone and missile strikes against Iran, attracting criticism from opposition politicians who fear the country could be targeted in retaliation. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has accused the US of carrying out a “massive escalation" in the conflict, rather than attempting to end the fighting, further intensifying tensions between the two countries.

Trump has repeatedly expressed frustration with NATO allies and has threatened to punish members that do not meet his 5% defence spending demands. The latest confrontation came during the ongoing Iran war, with Trump criticising NATO for inaction during the conflict.
On Friday, Trump warned that the US may reconsider its longstanding security commitments if NATO member countries do not step up support in West Asia. He alleged a lack of assistance from NATO partners in securing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime route disrupted amid the ongoing US-Israeli conflict with Iran.
Earlier, he dubbed NATO members as “COWARDS," and declared the alliance was a “paper tiger" without the United States. On the campaign trail in 2024, Trump famously encouraged Russian President Vladimir Putin to attack European NATO countries that did not pay their fair share on defence.
