US President Donald Trump has launched yet another fierce attack on Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, reviving a series of long-standing and highly controversial allegations against her. Speaking at a recent rally, Trump claimed that she had married her brother to enter the United States.

In his address, Trump stepped up his criticism of political leaders in Minnesota, a state with a significant Somali-American population and Omar’s political base.

“Minnesota is having the dumbest governor," he said, before turning to Omar. He described Somalia as “the worst country", claiming it lacked functioning institutions such as a parliament or police force and suggesting that “people police themselves". He went on to repeat the assertion that Omar “married her brother to get citizenship", adding: “We ought to get her the hell out… Throw her the hell out!"

Trump later claimed he had halted immigration from what he called “hellholes like Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, and several other countries."

Trump’s confrontations with Omar, a Somali-born American legislator representing Minnesota’s 5th District, are not new.

In the past he has labelled Omar “garbage", “terrible", and accused her of disloyalty to the country. On 2 December 2025, he once again referred to Somali immigrants as “garbage" while linking his criticism to unrelated fraud claims and an incident involving an Afghan shooter. Omar responded by calling his remarks “creepy" and politically motivated.

In September 2025, after Omar narrowly survived a House censure vote over comments related to the assassination of activist Charlie Kirk, Trump again mocked Somalia’s instability and revived the marriage allegation. He repeatedly said that Omar “does nothing but complain" and suggested that Somalia’s president should “take her back".

Omar has repeatedly dismissed the marriage allegation as false and racist, describing Trump’s comments as attempts to distract voters from issues such as rising living costs, health care pressures and ongoing political divisions.

She has argued that the president resorts to personal attacks whenever he faces criticism over policy shortfalls, including concerns relating to the Affordable Care Act and immigration reforms.
