Virender Sehwag carved a reputation as one of the most destructive openers in world cricket, remembered for his fearless strokeplay and the ability to dominate attacks in no time. The former India batter was the first from the country to register a triple century in Tests and once held the highest individual score in ODIs.

His uncomplicated but audacious approach made him a unique presence in the game and an inspiration for many. Now, his son Aryavir Sehwag has opened up on what it was like growing up around that legacy. In a recent interview posted by Delhi Capitals on their social media handle, Aryavir spoke candidly about his father’s influence on his cricketing journey.

“From childhood, I had the habit of playing with plastic bat and ball.

Me and my brother, we played a lot of cricket growing up, because that’s what we saw, seeing dad play,” the Central Delhi Kings player shared.

Currently part of the Delhi Premier League, Aryavir admitted that his understanding of his father’s stature has deepened only after stepping into competitive cricket himself. “As I am playing professional cricket for the last 2-3 years, I am slowly understanding what kind of player my dad was,” he said.

Sharing a lighter moment, Aryavir spoke about his father’s remark at home: “Ghar ki murgi dal barabar (Home-cooked chicken seems as good as dal).” But he was quick to counter that belief, adding, “But it’s not like that. As I’m playing, I’m understanding a lot about him and how great of a player he was. I really idolize him.”
