Police investigations into the deaths of three minor sisters in Ghaziabad have brought into focus the family’s deep financial distress, restrictions on mobile phone use and the children’s alleged exposure to Korean content and an online task-based game.

Sources have now said that the girls’ father was burdened with a debt of around Rs 2 crore and had sold the mobile phones of his daughters to pay for bills.

The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Wednesday, when the three sisters allegedly jumped from the balcony of their ninth-floor flat in the Sahibabad area.

They were rushed by ambulance to a nearby hospital in Loni, where doctors declared them dead on arrival.

HEAVY DEBT ON GHAZIABAD SISTERS’ FATHER, PHONES SOLD

Chetan Kumar, a stock trader, was under enormous financial strain and had sold his daughters’ mobile phones to clear pending electricity dues.

It was also known that he had threatened the three sisters that he would marry them off.

Kumar had also stopped allowing his three daughters to use his mobile phone in the days preceding the incident, and it is now being investigated if the girls, who were deeply influenced by Korean dramas, may have felt offended by the move.

It was also known that the family’s economic situation had worsened to such an extent that the girls had not been sent back to school even after the Covid-19 pandemic subsided.

GHAZIABAD SISTERS JUMP TO DEATH: WHAT HAPPENED THAT NIGHT

The police received information around 2.15 am that three girls had jumped from the balcony of their ninth-floor apartment in Bharat City under the Teela Mor police station limits.

When officers reached the spot, they found the girls had fallen to the ground floor and suffered fatal injuries. They were taken to a hospital in Loni, where they were declared dead.

Later, addressing the media, Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil said, “In the early hours of February 4, we received information that three girls jumped from a building. They were declared dead at the hospital."

SUICIDE LETTER, NOTES AND PHOTOS FOUND

Investigators recovered a diary containing a handwritten message that read, “Sorry papa, I am really sorry," along with a crying-face emoji. The note also urged readers to go through everything written in the diary.

Police said that after the room used by the three girls was broken open, officers also found a scribbled note and several photographs strewn across the floor, which were seized as part of the investigation.

Officials stressed that the exact circumstances leading up to the deaths were still being examined and that statements of family members were being recorded.

WHAT POLICE SAID ON KOREAN CONTENT AND ONLINE GAME

Police officers, speaking to the media over the incident, said the minors were influenced by Korean culture and had been spending a significant amount of time on their mobile phones.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Nimish Patil told news agency ANI that a suicide note recovered from the residence suggested such influence, adding, “From the suicide note, it is clear that the three girls were influenced by Korean culture. No particular app was named."

Assistant Commissioner of Police Atul Kumar Singh told news agency PTI that the sisters were addicted to a Korean task-based interactive “love game" and that recent restrictions imposed by their parents may have distressed them.

“This may have triggered the decision (to take the extreme step)," he said.

Patil also noted that the girls’ education had been irregular and their academic performance below par.

“But it is evident that the girls were highly addicted to mobile phone usage," he added.

FATHER’S EARLIER STATEMENTS TO POLICE AND MEDIA

Soon after the incident had come to light, Kumar said his daughters had been playing the game for two-and-a-half to three years and often spoke about wanting to go to Korea.

“They often said they wanted to go to Korea. I did not know that this game involved such tasks. I came to know about all this only after the police forensic team examined their mobile phones," he said.

“If I had known that such tasks existed, no father would ever allow his children to be part of it," Kumar added.

Recounting the sequence of events, he said that the family was asleep at the time.

“My wife was sleeping in the inner room. The girls woke up on the pretext of drinking water, bolted the door from inside and jumped from the balcony," he said.

Kumar also claimed the sisters had thrown their phones outside the room before jumping.

“The police later seized the phones for investigation," he said, adding that Prachi had once told him she was the “boss" and that her younger sisters followed her directions.

He further told investigators that the three did everything together, eating, bathing and spending time, and mostly remained confined to their room.

He said they had stopped attending school two to three years ago after failing academically, which made them feel embarrassed and withdrawn.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh’s police chief told PTI that the case was being examined in detail and highlighted the importance of cyber awareness, saying people could approach local police stations for help related to online addiction.
