Police have said the three minor sisters, who fell to their death from the ninth floor of a residential building in Ghaziabad early on Wednesday, were “highly obsessed" with Korean culture and thought they were “Korean princesses" and not Indian citizens.
According to police officials, this obsession with Korean culture was evident from the numerous notes the siblings left behind.
Identified as Nishika (16), Prachi (14), and Pakhi (12), the girls died after falling from the ninth floor of a residential building in the Loni area. The incident took place at 2.15 am while the rest of the family was asleep.
Deputy commissioner of police, Trans-Hindon, Nimish Patil, said they were “clearly influenced by Korean culture", a devotion that was meticulously documented in notes found at their residence. These notes also included apologies to their parents and caricatures.
The police said the notes suggest the siblings were obsessed with Korean songs, movies, cartoons, and YouTubers. They also hint at a growing rift between them and their parents regarding their interests.
“We love Korean culture…and we are being kept away from it. You tried to keep us away from Korean culture, now you must have realized how much we love it," stated one of the notes, as per police.
The police further said the notes suggest that the girls felt restricted from fully embracing their passion for K-pop and digital content. They also said their actions were influenced by online task-based games. While the preliminary probe confirmed that the minors frequently played such games, Patil said there is no specific app named in the notes.
While the police have categorised the incident as a suicide, an eyewitness account suggested that two of the girls fell while trying to save the third. Arun Kumar, a local resident who witnessed the fall around 2 am, suggested that the death of all three girls might not have been a planned jump.
“From what I saw, one of them planned to jump, and the others fell while trying to save her," Kumar told reporters, describing the scene as “abnormal" as the sisters sat on the balcony glass before the sudden fall.
The girls were rushed to a 50-bed hospital following the incident but were declared dead on arrival.
