Ghaziabad Woman Killed By Tenant After Going To Collect Rent, Body Stuffed In Suitcase

A woman in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad was found dead inside a suitcase days after she allegedly went to collect rent from a tenant couple, police said.

According to the police, the body of the landlady, identified as Deepshikha Sharma (48), was recovered from a suitcase in the rented flat, after which the couple, Ajay Gupta and Akriti Gupta, were taken into custody.

The incident took place at the Aura Chimera residential complex in Ghaziabad’s Raj Nagar Extension. Police said Umesh Sharma and Deepshikha Sharma own two flats in the society, living in one while renting out the other to the Guptas. Ajay Gupta, according to officials, is engaged in the transport business, NDTV reported.

The tenant couple had not paid rent for about four months, and Deepshikha, a teacher by profession, decided to confront them and ask them to pay. On Wednesday, she went to the Guptas’ home. At the time, her husband was not home.

When Deepshikha failed to return for several hours, her domestic help, Meena, began searching for her. She first went to the Guptas’ flat, but their responses aroused suspicion. Meena then checked the building’s CCTV footage, which showed Deepshikha entering the Guptas’ apartment but not coming out. The police were subsequently informed.

Around this time, the Guptas were seen leaving the building with a large suitcase. They had also called an auto-rickshaw, but before they could leave, the maid, Meena, stopped them.

They were forced to return to their flat. “I told them that they cannot go anywhere till Didi is found," an inconsolable Meena said.

After the police arrived, a search of the Guptas’ flat led to a shocking discovery: Deepshikha Sharma’s body was found stuffed inside a suitcase. Police suspect that an altercation broke out when she went to collect the rent, during which the tenant couple allegedly killed her, concealed the body in the suitcase, and were planning to dispose of it before the maid’s alert thwarted their attempt, NDTV reported.

“I told her (Deepshikha) not to go to their home alone. I told her I would come with her. But she still went alone," Meena said.

Deepshikha was initially struck on the head with a pressure cooker and then strangled with a dupatta, according to the police. Senior police officer Upasana Pandey said a complaint has been received from Deepshikha’s family and a case is being registered under the relevant sections of law.
