Girl, grandmother stabbed to death by youth near Pollachi

COIMBATORE: A youth murdered a 16-year-old girl and her grandmother near Pollachi in Coimbatore district on Monday night when she refused his proposal to marry him before she attained the legal age of marriage.

The murdered have been identified as B Kowsika of Kondekavundampalayam in Aavalpatti village and her grandmother M Mayilathal, 65. Kowsika’s sister, Haritha, 17, sustained injuries on her hand and face in the attack by the youth. She was admitted to Pollachi Government Headquarters Hospital.According to police, Abhishek, 24, of Negamam, and Kowsika had been in a relationship for the past three years. He along with his parents had approached the girl’s family with a marriage proposal.

However, the family said the proposal could be considered only after the girl attained the legal age for marriage.Police said the accused had continued to harass her asking her to marry him. On Monday evening, Abhishek went to the girl’s house and got into an altercation, insisting that she marry him. When she refused, he took a knife and stabbed her. When Mayilathal tried to intervene, he stabbed her too. He stabbed Haritha when she tried to stop him.

He then fled the scene.Kowsika and Mayilathal died on the spot.Neighbours informed the Negamam police, who rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and sent them to Pollachi Government Headquarters Hospital. Police registered a case and formed six special teams to nab the suspect, who was absconding.
