Girl injured by illegal electric fence around private memorial

Trichy: A 12-year-old girl sustained injuries after receiving an electric shock from an illegally installed fence around a private memorial near Thuraiyur in Trichy district on Thursday evening.The incident occurred at ‘Thai Kovil’, a private memorial built by an individual in memory of his mother along the Thuraiyur-Aathur Road. Many locals frequently walked past and peeped inside the structure. According to sources, the owner erected the electric fence around the complex to deter trespassers.The girl, Lakshana, accompanied by her mother Nithya, went for their evening walk and attempted to look over the locked front gate.

Upon touching it, she received an electric shock. The girl was rushed to Thuraiyur govt hospital for treatment.Officials from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board who visited the site confirmed the presence of the unauthorised electric fence. They noted that power consumption exceeded the sanctioned load.Official sources stated that installing such a fence in a public area frequented by people violated regulations. Police tried to contact the owner, but were unsuccessful.

Enraged relatives of the girl, along with local body representatives, protested by blocking the road in front of the Thai Kovil around 11 pm. They demanded strict legal action against the owner.After police pacified the protesters, the protesters dispersed. An investigation is under way.
