GMC commissioner Mayur Ashok reviews plans for storm water drains on Tuesday
Guntur: The Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) is preparing a comprehensive plan to strengthen the city’s storm water drainage network to ensure that rainwater is drained quickly without accumulating on major roads during heavy showers.
Municipal commissioner K Mayur Ashok said the civic body was working towards a permanent solution to the recurring problem of waterlogging in several parts of the city.Chairing a review meeting at his office on Tuesday, the commissioner examined a detailed presentation prepared by representatives of SEGH associates, who have been studying the city’s major storm water outfall drains and flood-prone locations.
The consultants made a presentation outlining measures required to improve rainwater drainage and prevent inundation. The presentation covered key outfall drains, including Peekala Vagu in Brindavan Gardens and Kobbari Thota areas, Ambedkar Vaagu near Reliance on the Inner Ring Road, and major drainage channels in Budampadu and Sangadigunta. The study assessed the existing drainage network and identified measures to ensure the uninterrupted flow of storm water into canals and natural drains during periods of heavy rainfall.
Speaking at the meeting, Mayur Ashok noted that even moderate rainfall causes water to stagnate on roads in several parts of Guntur, leading to inconvenience for commuters, residents and motorists. He said the civic administration was committed to eliminating this recurring problem through scientific planning and infrastructure improvements. The commissioner said SEGH associates had conducted a detailed assessment of the city’s drainage system and prepared recommendations based on field studies.
He directed engineering officials to prepare detailed proposals based on the consultants’ findings so that long-term works could be taken up to strengthen the storm water drainage network. He emphasised that the focus would be on ensuring that rainwater is discharged efficiently through the city’s major outfall drains, preventing flooding of roads and low-lying areas during the monsoon. The proposed improvements are expected to enhance the capacity of the drainage system and provide a permanent solution to urban flooding in vulnerable localities. GMC in charge Superintending Engineer Sundara Ramireddy, SEGH associates representative Sharath and engineering officials attended the review meeting.
