Panaji: Goa registered a modest improvement in the Union education ministry’s annual Performance Grading Index (PGI), which assesses the quality of school education across states and Union territories.
Released on Tuesday, the latest index placed Goa in the Prachesta-1 category, up from Prachesta-3 last year. South Goa scored 351 and North Goa 344 out of a total weightage of 600.States and UTs are evaluated across 70 indicators under six broad parameters — learning outcomes and quality, access, infrastructure and facilities, equity, governance processes, and teacher education and training. In the previous assessment for 2024-25, Goa scored 613.2 out of the earlier 1,000-point scale and was placed in the Prachesta-3 category.
The state was advised to closely monitor and improve performance, particularly in learning outcomes and governance processes. In the latest assessment, Goa scored 146-157 out of 290 in learning outcomes, an improvement from 61.4 out of 240 in the 2021-22 PGI. The scores for this parameter are based on the National Achievement Survey conducted by NCERT. Over the years, the survey has found the state’s students performing below expectations in mathematics and science.Goa, however, scored only 43-44 out of 84 in governance processes.
’Daksh’ is the highest PGI category, awarded to states scoring between 941 and 1,000 points. Prachesta-1 is the fourth-highest category. In the inaugural PGI assessment, Goa was placed in the eighth category, Akankshi-1, reflecting significant progress since then. The PGI aims to encourage states and UTs to improve the quality of school education through targeted interventions and by adopting best practices from top-performing regions.
