The football world was taken aback on Thursday following the tragic death of Portuguese footballer Diogo Jota, who attained heavenly abode following a horrific car crash, alongside his brother Andre in Zamora, Spain.

Jota, who represented Premier League side Liverpool and the Portuguese national side, was all of 28-years of age and tied the knot just over a week ago.

Portuguese club Porto, where Jota enjoyed a loan spell ahead of his move to PL side Wolves, shared a post that read, “FC Porto is in mourning. It is with shock and deep sorrow that we send our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva, who was also our athlete in the youth ranks. Rest in peace."

Transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano shared a post that read, “Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother have both passed away due to traffic accident, reports Marca. Deepest condolences, support, and thoughts are with those involved, his family and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace."

Jota, who started his youth career at Gondomar in 2005 before moving to Pacos de Ferreira, with whom he made his senior debut in 2014. He made the switch to Atletico Madrid in 2016, but was loaned out immediately to Porto for a season and then to Wolves in the year 2017, before he made the permeant switch to the Molinuex.

His showing for the Wolves earned him a switch to PL giants Liverpool in the year 2020, with whom he managed to clinch the Premier League, the FA Cup and the EFL League Cup. He was also part of the UEFA Nations League winning Portuguese side in both the 2018/19 campaign and the 2024/25 season.
