Here’s what it may mean for users

Google is reportedly working on a new AI-powered feature for Google Maps called ‘Ask Maps’. According to a report by Android Authority, the feature will allow users to have text-based conversations about locations, routes, and other map-related information directly within the app.

The Ask Maps feature is currently under development and was spotted during an APK teardown of Google Maps version 26.07.01.867227976 on Android. As per the screenshot shared by the publication, Ask Maps will appear as a new chip below the search bar in the Google Maps app. The chip reportedly includes a sparkle icon linked to Gemini and the label “Ask Maps”. Tapping it is expected to open a bottom sheet with a Gemini-like conversation screen and a text box where users can type questions. The feature is currently under development and is expected to roll out in the future.

What Ask Maps could mean for Google Maps users

Once rolled out, the feature is expected to make it easier for users to find information without manually searching through menus or listings. Users may be able to ask direct questions about nearby places, routes, travel options, and other map-related details in plain text. The chatbot is expected to use Google Maps data to respond to these queries, potentially reducing the steps needed to plan travel or explore locations.

The report added that Ask Maps may first be released as an experimental option. A new “Try new features” section was reportedly found in the app’s settings, which could be used to enable early access. Code strings also suggest that access may be limited at launch, with a message indicating that only a small number of users may be allowed to try the feature initially. The report noted that the information is based on an APK teardown. Features found during such testing do not always launch publicly, or may change before release. Google has not made an official announcement about Ask Maps so far.
