In a significant administrative move, the government has ordered a comprehensive review of the functioning of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Kurukshetra, including an examination of its leadership.
According to the official order, the step involves the “constitution of a Committee to review the work, progress and affairs of NIT, Kurukshetra under the leadership role of Director (Prof. BV Ramana Reddy)." The decision follows provisions under the NIT Act, 2007, which empowers the Visitor to assess institutional performance and governance.
The document notes that the President of India, acting as the Visitor of NITs, is authorized to initiate such reviews. It states that the Visitor may “appoint one or more persons to review the work and progress of any institute and to hold inquiries into the affairs thereof," and that the institute is obligated to comply with any directions issued thereafter.
A three-member committee has been constituted to carry out the review. The panel includes Prof. Anil Sahasrabudhe, Chairman of the National Educational Technology Forum; Prof. MM Gopal, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at VNIT Nagpur; and Prof. KK Shukla, Director of MANIT Bhopal.
The terms of reference for the committee are wide-ranging. These include “to review the work, progress and affairs of NIT Kurukshetra" in line with statutory provisions, as well as “to examine the overall functioning of the institute, including governance, academic and administrative functioning."
The panel will also look into recruitment and promotion systems, investigate complaints, and assess institutional performance, including rankings and administrative efficiency. Crucially, it has been tasked “to examine the leadership and functioning of the Director (Prof. B.V. Ramana Reddy)," signaling a focused review of the institute’s top leadership.
The order further states that NIT Kurukshetra will provide full logistical and secretarial support to the committee, ensuring access to relevant records and stakeholders to facilitate the inquiry.
Officials indicated that the findings of the committee are expected to play a key role in shaping future administrative and academic reforms at the institute.
