GRH performs complex cardiac stent procedure

Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai has achieved a medical landmark by performing Tamil Nadu’s first successful transcatheter covered stent implantation in a government medical college hospital to treat a rare congenital heart defect.

Madurai: The cardiology department at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai has successfully performed a transcatheter covered stent implantation to treat congenital heart disease.

The procedure was carried out on a 17-year-old girl from Virudhunagar district, who had features suggestive of Sinus Venosus Defect (Superior Vena Cava Type Atrial Septal Defect). The hospital said this was the first time the procedure was successfully performed in a govt medical college hospital in Tamil Nadu. “Traditionally, patients with SVC Type Sinus Venosus ASD are treated by open-heart surgery. The novel transcatheter technique involved deployment of a specially designed covered stent within Superior Vena Cava (SVC) to close the defect and exclude the interatrial communication by redirecting blood flow,” said Dr G Selvarani, professor and head, department of cardiology, who led the procedure.

A team of cardiologists with the help of a team of anesthetists with the backup of cardio thoracic vascular surgery team performed the procedure.

Dr Pramod Sagar from Chennai, an internationally recognised expert in structural heart interventions, guided the team. The consumables and sophisticated hardware cost around Rs5 lakh, but the procedure was carried out under CMCHIS scheme free of cost for the patient.
