Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa entered the history books on June 11 by becoming the first footballer to feature in six FIFA World Cup editions.

Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa is part of Mexico’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and, on Thursday (June 11), entered the history books by becoming the first footballer to be feature in six FIFA World Cup editions. The 40-year-old Guadalajara-born shot-stopper is participating in his sixth FIFA World Cup this year.

Ochoa was first selected for Mexico’s FIFA World Cup squad in 2006, when the tournament was held in Germany. He was also part of Mexico’s squads for the 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions of the FIFA World Cup.

However, he did not feature in any matches during the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. Ochoa made his FIFA World Cup debut in 2014 against Cameroon and also played in Mexico’s Group A matches against Brazil and Croatia. He was Mexico’s goalkeeper in their Round of 16 clash against the Netherlands but could not help his team secure a victory.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Ochoa played all three group-stage matches against Germany, South Korea and Sweden, as well as the Round of 16 match against Brazil, which Mexico lost 2-0.
Ochoa was once again Mexico’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and played all three group-stage matches against Poland, Argentina and Saudi Arabia.
No player in FIFA World Cup history has previously been selected for six editions of the tournament.
Lionel Messi of Argentina and Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal have also been selected by their national teams for what could be their sixth FIFA World Cup appearance.

Ronaldo, the all-time leading scorer in international football, has the opportunity to make history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by becoming the first player to score in six different editions of the tournament.
The Portuguese star, who made his FIFA World Cup debut in 2006, has scored at least one goal in each of the previous five World Cups.
