Gujarat govt to renew contracts of khel sahayaks in primary schools

Ahmedabad: The state education department has cleared the extension of contracts of khel sahayaks (sports assistants) employed in govt primary schools in the state. The move comes after the govt renewed the contracts of gyan sahayaks (teaching assistants) in secondary schools, following reports of a severe shortage of teachers in govt schools. As stated in an official communication, around 1,400 sports assistants, whose contracts lapsed, will now have their service period extended. The renewal will be implemented under the current govt rules and regulations. At the same time, officials have been told to confirm that every case matches the provisions set out in the 2023 govt resolution, along with the contract’s stated terms and conditions.Extensions will be provided only to assistants who fulfil all eligibility conditions and contractual obligations.

The education department has instructed the office of the director of primary education to handle this as a priority and finish all required administrative formalities without any delay. The objective is to prevent interruptions to sports and physical education in govt primary schools because of staff shortages. The decision is likely to support thousands of schools across the state by ensuring continuity in extracurricular activities and physical training programmes. For the sports assistants, many of whom were waiting for clear information about what comes next, the announcement offers much-needed employment stability and financial relief.
