Gurgaon civic body orders safety audit ahead of monsoon, warns against loss of life

Gurgaon: MCG commissioner Pradeep Dahiya on Thursday directed officials to ensure there is no loss of life during the upcoming monsoon. He ordered immediate checks and repairs of manhole covers, streetlight wiring and electrical infrastructure across the city.Chairing a meeting on monsoon preparedness at MCG office, the commissioner said all manhole covers and slabs must be secured and in proper condition before the rains begin.He also asked officials to ensure no streetlight wires are exposed and that all electrical panel boxes are fully functional to prevent accidents during the rainy season.Officials said repair work on streetlight boxes and electrical wiring is under way.

Streetlights on major roads are also being connected to the centralised control and monitoring system (CCMS) to improve monitoring and maintenance.During the meeting, Dahiya reviewed the city’s overall preparedness, including identification of waterlogging hotspots, drain cleaning and desilting, and deployment of manpower and machinery.He also directed officials to complete all drainage and sewer cleaning before the onset of the monsoon and to deploy pumps and machinery in advance at waterlogging-prone locations.

"Ward-wise arrangements for pumps and resources will be made. Point-wise response teams comprising junior engineers, assistant sanitation inspectors, sanitation supervisors and other staff will be formed to handle monsoon-related issues," civic officials said.The commissioner also asked officials to arrange suction tankers to remove accumulated rainwater from roadsides and low-lying areas, maintain connectivity between smaller and main drains, and keep gully traps and weep holes clean.Emphasising coordination among departments, Dahiya said, "Preventing waterlogging, sewer overflow and other monsoon-related problems is a priority for the civic body, and all preparations must be completed before the rainy season."In July 2025, a 25‑year‑old graphic designer was electrocuted by a submerged live wire while crossing a flooded road, and a 27‑year‑old autorickshaw driver drowned after his vehicle plunged into an uncovered sewer on a waterlogged street, prompting negligence cases against civic authorities.The same spells of intense rain saw at least eight people die across the city due to electrocution, drowning and rain‑related accidents, highlighting chronic infrastructure risks ahead of the next monsoon.
