Guwahati jail superintendent was arrested on Thursday for allegedly supplying drugs and other prohibited items to prison inmates in exchange for money. His arrest comes a day after two personnel of the 4th Assam Police Battalion, deployed at Guwahati’s high-security prison, were arrested in the same case.
As per the officials, an inquiry was initiated after a complaint was lodged on the easy availability of drugs and liquor inside the Guwahati Central Jail.
As per a report by Hindustan Times, Guwahati Central Jail Superintendent, Debokamal Borah, was arrested in the morning by a team from the Basistha police station.
On Wednesday, two personnel, Konkan Bora and Devajit Das, were arrested for supplying marijuana and liquor to the inmates of the jail in lieu of money.
“We have found the involvement of the two jawans and arrested them this morning. Further investigation is going on to find out the involvement of more people in the network," a police officer told PTI.
As per the report, these two jawans told the police that they were not acting alone and alleged the involvement of the jail superintendent. The police said that based on their statements and evidence, Borah’s involvement was ascertained and he was arrested.
An internal inquiry was initiated after the registration of the first information report (FIR) earlier this week. The complaint was raised by jail authorities over easily accessible drugs in the jail.
