Gymnasts train abroad after a gap of 16 years

NEW DELHI: A foreign training camp has been organised for Indian gymnasts after a gap of 16 years to prepare for the forthcoming FIG World Challenge Cups and other international competitions scheduled later this year.TOI has learnt that the country’s gymnastics contingent, led by Pranati Nayak, Tapan Mohanty and Tapeswarnath Das, is currently training at INSEP (National Institute of Sport, Expertise and Performance), France’s elite Olympic and Paralympic training centre, since the first week of September, ahead of the World Challenge Cup in Paris on Sept 13-14.

According to sources, this marks the first foreign training camp for gymnasts since 2009, following the derecognition of the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) by the sports ministry in 2011. The camp at INSEP, located on a 28-hectare campus in Paris’ Bois de Vincennes, will conclude on Sept 22.The GFI is currently involved in a legal battle with the Delhi High Court staying its elections in Sept 2023. The ministry derecognised its affiliation owing to the federation’s non-adherence to the national sports code.
