Anisimova, after a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, thanked her mother. She had taken a break in 2023 for mental health and returned to reach the final in 2024.

Amanda Anisimova kept apologizing to the Centre Court crowd—not only for her performance in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Iga Swiatek in the Wimbledon final, but for struggling to speak through tears in the emotional aftermath.

Despite the tough result, the 23-year-old American, appearing in her first Grand Slam final, made sure to show deep gratitude, especially to her mother, who made a rare trip to watch her play live.

“My mom is the most selfless person I know, and she’s done everything to get me to this point in my life," said Anisimova, whose father passed away in 2019 when she was just 17.

As she turned to speak directly to her mother, her voice cracked with emotion.

“Thank you for being here and breaking the superstition of flying in," she said with a tearful smile, adding jokingly, “It’s definitely not why I lost today."

Though the scoreline didn’t reflect it, the moment was significant for Anisimova, who appreciated having her mother by her side on such a big stage.

“I’m so happy that I get to share this moment and for you to be here and witness this in person. I know you don’t get to see me live, playing, that much anymore, because you do so much for my sister and I, and you always have. I love you so much."

A Remarkable Journey Back

Anisimova’s road to the final has been anything but conventional. Once a rising teenage star, she won the 2017 U.S. Open junior title over Coco Gauff and reached the French Open quarterfinals in 2019. But in May 2023, she stepped away from tennis to address mental health struggles and burnout.

Her return in 2024 began with a world ranking of No. 189, too low for automatic entry into Wimbledon. She failed to qualify last year—but a year later, she not only made the main draw but reached the final, becoming just the second woman in the Open Era to do so after falling in qualifying the year before.

On her way to the championship match, she stunned world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals—arguably the biggest win of her career.

Anisimova will now enter the WTA top 10 for the first time, a remarkable feat for someone who stepped away from the game only a year ago.
