A late-night confrontation in Chennai’s Thiruvanmiyur has sparked outrage after a policeman was caught on video telling a woman that harassment happens because people roam around on the streets after 12 am.
The woman, who has been caring for stray dogs in her lane for nearly 20 years, was stopped by two policemen while feeding them.
One of the officers, identified as Karthik, objected to her activity and suggested she avoid feeding the animals for four days so they would “stop coming automatically."
The discussion soon turned heated, leading both the woman and the officer to begin recording the exchange.
In the footage, the woman challenges the policeman’s behaviour, while Karthik is heard making the remark that has since been widely criticised as victim-blaming.
Following the uproar, Thiruvanmiyur police said the matter was being reviewed, reported India Today.
However, Karthik later defended himself, claiming he had said “arrest" and not “harassment."
He told his seniors that he only advised the woman not to step out past midnight, warning that she could otherwise face arrest.
Despite the controversy, no action has been initiated against the officer, and the case has been closed.
