Hassan Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumari has formed a committee of six members, that includes cardiologists, to submit a report after looking into the recent deaths due to heart attack, as reported in a section of the media.

Ms. Lathakumari held a meeting with senior officers of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Medical Education on June 30 and decided to form the team. The team has been given a week’s time to submit the report.

No data on heart-related deaths

When contacted over the phone, the DC appealed to the public not to panic over the reported incidents of deaths. “One can conclude the cause of death only after a proper examination. The committee includes the District Health Officer, Director of Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences, cardiologists, among others. I have instructed them to study each case of death reported in a section of media and submit a report,” she said.

The officer maintained that the district administration had no data about the recent deaths due to heart-related issues. “A section of media has reported the deaths. Based on the media reports, I have formed the committee. The cause of death could be anything, but ultimately the heart stops beating. Each case needs to be looked into in detail to arrive at a conclusion. Only after the committee concludes its investigation and submits its report can we comment on the issue,” she stated.

Separate committee

Further, she clarified that the committee she constituted was separate from the state-level committee headed by the director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bengaluru. “The district-level committee has been formed with a specific purpose. The members will look into the cause of death in each case. If not heart-related issues, there could be other health reasons for the death of youngsters. The members will look into that,” she added.

There have been reports in the media about the sudden deaths of people, including youngsters, in Hassan district for the past few days.
