The partner of 27-year-old Kavin Selva Ganesh, an IT professional who was hacked to death in a suspected caste-based honour killing in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli last week, has denied her family’s involvement in the murder.

In a self-made video posted on social media, the girl has urged the netizens not to speculate about the incident or blame her family.

The police have arrested the woman’s brother, Surjit. A case was registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with provisions from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 2015. Their parents — Saravanan and Krishnakumari — both serving as Sub-Inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Police, have also been named in the FIR and have been suspended.

What She Said?

In the video, the woman publicly denied her family’s involvement. “Only Kavin and I knew about our relationship. My parents have no connection. Please don’t speak without knowing the truth," she said.

The woman said she and Kavin were in love but had decided to wait before telling their families. She claimed her brother Surjit had spoken to Kavin and later informed her father.

“On May 30, Surjit and Kavin spoke to each other. At that time, Surjit told my father about Kavin. My father then asked me if I was in love with him… I told him ‘no’. But I only said that because Kavin asked me for some time…" she said in the video.

She maintained that she did not know what conversation took place between Surjit and Kavin.

She further said that she told Kavin to visit her family on July 28 but a day earlier his grandfather had a head injury and was admitted in the clinic.

Reiterating her appeal, she said, “Many are creating rumours. Please don’t talk whatever you think. My mother and father have no connection in this. Let us leave it as such," she said.

What’s The Case?

The victim, Kavin Selva Ganesh, a Dalit, had reportedly gone to a Siddha clinic in Tirunelveli town on Sunday evening to meet his former schoolmate and suspected girlfriend, S Subhashini, who is a practitioner, regarding treatment for his ailing grandfather.

According to police, an argument broke out between Ganesh and Surjit, Subhashini’s brother, outside the clinic. Surjit allegedly attacked Ganesh with a sickle.

The incident occurred around 200 metres from the clinic where the woman worked. Surjit initially fled but later surrendered at Palayamkottai Police Station.

Kavin, a native of Arumugamangalam in Thoothukudi district who belonged to the Devendra Kula Vellalar, a Dalit sub-caste, was allegedly in a relationship with Subhashini whose family is from the Maravar community, a dominant caste group in Tamil Nadu.

Police said the woman’s family had objected to their relationship.

The accused’s parents — both sub-inspectors attached to a battalion in Manimuthar — have also been named in the FIR following a complaint by Ganesh’s mother, S Tamilselvi, who alleged that they had issued repeated threats to her son.

Kavin’s family has refused to accept his body and is demanding legal action against Surjit’s parents.

“My son is an innocent person. The woman asked him to come to the hospital. The accused took my son out, threw chilli powder on his face, and attacked him with a machete… The government should immediately expel his mother and father from service," the victim’s father, Chandrashekar, said.
