Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most corrupt Chief Minister in India" and claiming that the people of Assam would send him to jail.

Speaking at a public rally in Guwahati, Gandhi said the Assam CM behaves like a “raja".

“Assam’s Chief Minister is the most corrupt Chief Minister in India – and, in just a short time, Congress’s brave lion will put him behind bars. The fear is clearly visible in his eyes – because now neither Modi nor Shah can save him!" Gandhi told the crowd.

The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha also accused Sarma of handing over Assam’s land and wealth to “billionaires like Ambani and Adani".

Gandhi’s remarks came shortly after Sarma claimed that the Congress leader had, during a closed-door party meeting, said he would “definitely be sent to jail".

“Take it in writing, Himanta Biswa Sarma will definitely be sent to jail’ — these were the exact words spoken by the Leader of the Opposition, Shri Rahul Gandhi, during his closed-door meeting with the Congress Political Affairs Committee in Assam," Sarma wrote in a post on X.

Assam chief minister also took a dig at Gandhi, saying he had “conveniently forgotten" that he himself is out on bail in several criminal cases filed across the country.

“He came all the way to Assam just to say this, conveniently forgetting that he himself is out on bail in multiple criminal cases registered across the country," Sarma added.

“My best wishes to you, Rahul ji. Enjoy the hospitality of Assam for the rest of the day," he concluded.

Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge are on a day-long visit to Assam to meet party leaders and chalk out a strategy ahead of the state assembly elections, due next year.

After their first closed-door meeting near Guwahati airport, Assam Pradesh Congress President Gaurav Gogoi said in a post on X that detailed discussions had taken place to strengthen the party and prepare for the challenges ahead.
