Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma came down heavily on Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, accusing him of having minimal commitment or understanding of Assam’s politics and society.
Sarma labelled Gogoi a “tourist" in Assam politics, stressing that he visited the state briefly and is now seeking political advantage while lacking basic knowledge.
“If someone asks him to name the constituencies from Tinsukia district to Golaghat district in Upper Assam, he will not be able to answer properly," Sarma said during a press conference.
His comments came in response to Gogoi’s reported claim that the Congress will win 50 seats in Upper Assam. He said the claim itself shows a lack of understanding, as Upper Assam has only 42 assembly constituencies.
Sarma said this shows that Gogoi lacks deep roots in Assam or a clear grasp of the state’s political and social dynamics. He questioned his claim of building a “BOR Asom" (Greater Assam), a concept the Congress leader has reportedly mentioned in recent speeches.
“He talks about building a greater Assam that includes all communities and religions, but his own children are not Assamese," he said. “He speaks of greater Assam, yet he has not fulfilled even the basic norms. He could not even change the citizenship status of his children. A person whose children are not Assamese — how can he claim that he will build a greater Assam? In such a BOR Asom, only the miyans will remain."
He advised the public not to take Gogoi seriously. “People should not pay attention to him. I don’t think he speaks on any serious matter," he added.
