Heavy rain and gusty winds disrupted flight operations at Mumbai international airport on Sunday, forcing the airport authorities to suspend all runway operations for an hour and leading to cancellations, diversions and widespread delays, sources said.

Four IndiGo flights were cancelled and 13 arriving flights operated by various airlines were diverted to nearby airports because of the weather. The diverted flights later landed back in Mumbai. According to the latest data on flight tracking website flightradar24.com, 90 per cent of outbound flights were departing late by an average of 65 minutes, while 45 per cent of incoming flights were also delayed, severely affecting passengers.

Mumbai International Airport, jointly owned by the Adani Group and the Airports Authority of India, said in a statement, "At approximately 10.17 am, adverse weather conditions, including strong gusty winds of up to 42 knots and reduced visibility due to heavy rain, impacted runway operations." It said runway operations were "temporarily suspended" as per procedure to ensure the safety of passengers, aircraft and ground personnel.

The airport operator said normal runway operations resumed after an hour after weather conditions improved.

The four cancelled IndiGo flights were 6E 395 from Delhi to Mumbai, 6E 5273 from Mumbai to Indore, 6E 552 from Indore to Mumbai, and 6E 6613 from Mumbai to Delhi, sources said. In a post on X, IndiGo said, "Bad weather over Delhi and Mumbai has impacted flight schedule. We are closely monitoring the weather....we request you that you stay updated on your flight status." The airline, however, did not mention the four flights cancelled at Mumbai international airport.

According to Air Traffic Control sources, the airport handles 980 to 1,000 flights a day, with an average of 48 air traffic movements every hour, including 24 arrivals and 24 departures. Overall, the bad weather briefly halted runway operations, led to four cancellations and 13 diversions, and caused delays across a large number of flights before normal operations resumed.
