Heavy rain pushes Ganga above danger level in Patna

Patna: The water level in the Ganga in Patna has once again risen due to heavy rainfall in surrounding areas of the state. In several parts of the city, the river is currently flowing above the danger mark.According to data released by the chief engineer of flood control and drainage in the water resource department on Monday, the water level at Maner was 20cm above the danger mark of 52 metres, while at Digha Ghat it was 8cm above. At Gandhi Ghat, the river is flowing 57cm above the danger mark of 50.45 metres, and at Hathidah it is at 42.27 metres, 51cm above the danger mark of 41.76 metres.An official from the disaster management department said the situation was being closely monitored.

“Even the last time the water level rose in Allahabad and Varanasi and subsequently in Patna, before gradually stabilizing and then receding,” he said.Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rainfall is likely in the northern districts of the state from Tuesday. The department has issued an alert for thunderstorms and lightning in 25 districts, including West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Vaishali, Muzaffarpur, Sheohar, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Darbhanga, Samastipur, Supaul, Araria, Kishanganj, Purnia, Katihar, Madhepura, Saharsa, Buxar, Bhojpur, Rohtas, Kaimur, Aurangabad and Arwal.

Scattered rainfall is expected in some southern districts.Over the past 24 hours on Monday, light to moderate showers were recorded in Gaya, Madhubani, Araria, Darbhanga, Kishanganj, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Patna, Agwanpur and Buxar.
