Landslides after heavy rain cut the Geyzing Legship road in West Sikkim, blocking traffic, while severe rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh damages NEEPCO Colony and a highway bridge.

The Geyzing-Legship road in West Sikkim was washed away due to heavy rains in the region.
The main road link to Geyzing district headquarters in West Sikkim was temporarily cut off and vehicular movements were disrupted on Tuesday night following heavy rainfall in the area. Multiple landslides were triggered along the vital Geyzing-Legship road.
Geyzing recorded 95.2 mm of rainfall during the past 24 hours, India Meteorological Department (IMD) informed. The authorities received information about the landslide around 9PM, Tenzing Denzongpa, the District Magistrate, said.
Two kilometers from the Geyzing town, is Omchung which is the worst-affected site, according to reports. The road in the area was blocked for traffic because of a nearby stream and continuous rainfall which sent sludge, mud, and large boulders crashing down.
Authorities estimated that several hours of work would be required to clear the area of debris and to restore normal movement. This is despite excavators being deployed in the region immediately and the restoration work beginning overnight.
Sagar Sharma, who is a member of the Zilla Panchayat, said that at least three locations along the route have reported to be affected by landslides. This includes a major landslide near Omchung and another just below the same stretch. There is a third notable landslide near Legship, he informed.
No permanent mitigation measures have been implemented even though repeated discussions have been held during district-level meetings, Sharma claimed. He expressed concern over these recurring monsoon-related disruptions. The Geyzing-Legship road is this district’s primary lifeline and there are no alternative routes available for residents, transportation of goods, and for emergency services, he emphasised.
Meanwhile heavy rainfall has also caused significant destruction at the NEEPCO Colony in Posa, Yazali, Keyi Panyor District, Arunachal Pradesh, India. Around 15 quarters have been destroyed, and the main highway bridge has been washed away, according to reports.
Extremely heavy rainfall and flash floods have also been reported in Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh. These are expected to have downstream impacts on several districts of Assam, which is why the Assam government is on high alert.
The government in Dispur is closely monitoring the situation arising out of these massive downpours, a press release from the Assam government said.
According to information received from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Guwahati and Meteorological Centre, Itanagar, Yazali station in Lower Subansiri district recorded about 72.8 mm of rainfall during the last 24 hours, with a major part of the rainfall occurring between 6 AM and 9 AM hrs on 24 June.
