Following heavy rainfall in the Koyna dam’s catchment area in Maharashtra, the authorities have issued an alert informing people about increased discharge into the Koyna.
On Saturday at 11 a.m., six radial gates at Koyna dam were opened by 4 ft., leading to the release of 16,565 cusecs of water into the river. As both the units of the Koyna dam’s powerhouse are operational, an additional 2,100 cusecs are also being released, resulting in a total discharge of 18,665 cusecs.
This development coupled with heavy rainfall in the catchment area and discharge from the Krishna (Kallol barrage) and the Ghataprabha (Lolasur bridge) has resulted in increased inflow to the Almatti reservoir. Consequently, the authorities have increased the outflow from the Almatti dam from the existing 42,500 cusecs to 80,000 cusecs on Saturday at 8.30 a.m.
The authorities have issued a warning to the villages downstream of the dam to be cautious in the wake of the increased discharge of water.
According to the officials, there has been an increase in the discharge from the various barrages in Belagavi district and the villages downstream have been issued a warning.
