In a split-second act of courage, a 55-year-old woman jumped into a deep well to save her daughter, triggering a dramatic rescue operation in Aiyankattu Thottam near Nambiyur on Tuesday.

Divya, 27, daughter of Sundaram from Oonjapalayam, reportedly leaped into a well in the Vettaiampalayam area. She had been undergoing treatment for special needs, according to local sources.

Without hesitation, her mother Muthumani followed her and jumped into the water-filled well. Inside, she managed to hold onto a rope while clutching her daughter, keeping both afloat in a desperate fight for survival.

Her cries for help echoed through the area, alerting neighbours who quickly informed the Kadtur Police and the Nambiyur Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived with specialised rescue equipment and descended into the well using ropes and safety harnesses. After a tense operation, both women were carefully secured and lifted to safety.

Exhausted but alive, the mother and daughter were brought to the surface amid emotional scenes. Residents praised Muthumani’s bravery and the fire department’s swift response that prevented a tragedy.

Police have launched a routine inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
